The Building Strong Communities (BSC) program is a multi-trade, apprenticeship program that exposes individuals to various careers in the construction industry. BSC offers the opportunity to receive union-endorsed skills training, interview and networking practice, and a “foot in the door” to a career in the trades. Program graduates will have an opportunity to interview with participating labor unions and contractors who are hiring.

Hello, Building Strong Communities participants!

North Hennepin Community College is excited to welcome you as a non-degree seeking student in our Construction Management program to explore union construction career pathways.

To get started, there is a two-step process you will need to complete. The first is applying to NHCC, and second is registering for the BSC course. Follow the two-step process outlined below.

NOTE:  If you have previously attended any of the 37 Minnesota State colleges or universities, please apply to NHCC using your existing STAR ID.  If you have previously applied to NHCC, there is no need to apply again. Additionally, if you have a current hold (suspension or balance due) from NHCC or any other Minnesota State school, you must work with that school to complete the necessary steps to remove the hold.

Two-step Process

  1. Apply to NHCC

    1. Complete the online admission application, be sure to select the "not seeking a degree" option
    2. IMPORTANT: Write down your StarID (2 letters, 4 numbers, 2 letters) that will be shown to you after you have entered your name, email address, and created a password
    3. Please refer to our video instructions or screen shot document for step-by-step assistance

*Please allow 2-3 business days for your application to be processed before trying to register for the class.

  2. Register for the Course
    1. After you have received your acceptance communication via email, log into eServices to register for the CSMV 1000 course
      • Check with your site coordinator to learn which specific section you should register for
    2. Please refer to our video instructions or screen shot document for step-by-step assistance

Frequently Asked Questions

The spring admission application is open now and students must apply by January 27th.

You will use the same StarID for all Minnesota State colleges and universities. If you forgot your StarID, or need to reset your password, visit www.nhcc.edu/StarID.

As a non-degree seeking student, you do not need to complete course placement testing or NHCC's orientation. If you decide to complete a degree at NHCC in the future, you will need to complete a Major Update Form to switch from non-degree to degree-seeking. You will then need to complete the remaining degree-seeking steps. Please note: you will not need to reapply.

If you have an academic or financial suspension at another MinnState institution, you will receive an email to complete the Transfer Suspension Appeal form. If your academic suspension is approved, you must first meet with an academic advisor to lift your suspension hold, prior to you enrolling into the course. Your appeal communication will detail this information.

If you have any balance holds at another institution, that must be paid before you are able to register for classes at NHCC. Please contact the institution with the balance hold directly to clear up the balance and hold.

Beginning January 20th! After you have received your acceptance email, you should be able to register for CMSV 1000 through eServices. You will be able to register through Friday, February 14th at 11:59pm.

BSC students will register for CMSV 1000, section 93 or 94.

Power Up students will register for CMSV 1000, section 91 or 92.

You can ignore those emails. Your record will be coded so you are not dropped from your class due to non-payment.

You will access the course through D2L Brightspace. You will not be able to click into the class until Monday, February 10th. Make sure to check out the D2L Getting Started Guide to familiarize yourself before the class starts.

Email is the official means of communication at NHCC. You will need to set up your email and make sure to check it daily.

You will have until Friday, February 21st at 11:59pm to drop the course (no tuition will be charged and the course will not appear on your transcript). If you remove the course after that time, it will be considered a withdraw (you will receive a W on the transcript, which affects academic standing). The last day to withdraw from the course is April 15th.
