¡Bienvenidos! As we begin a new academic year at North Hennepin Community College, I am filled with excitement and gratitude. Each fall brings a renewed opportunity to serve our students and our community by being inclusive, welcoming, and offering hope, inspiration, and love.

This year, we are proud to welcome more than 5,100 students, a 5% increase over last year! Seventy percent of our students are part-time, balancing studies with family and work responsibilities. Most of our courses include an on-campus component, creating a vibrant atmosphere, with about 750 students enrolled in evening classes. More than 1,300 high school students are earning college credit through our Postsecondary Enrollment Options program.

At North Hennepin, we are more than an institution of learning. Every student who walks through our doors brings unique experiences, dreams and challenges. It is our responsibility, and our privilege, to meet them where they are, to see their potential and to help them achieve their goals.

Recently, we asked students on our mobile app what motivates them this semester. Their responses were heartfelt and inspiring:

Susan Hassan wrote, “What keeps me going is knowing that every class brings me closer to graduating and to achieving my dream!”

Miracle Clarkson wrote, “One thing that is motivating me this semester are my clients. I currently work at Fraser where I support both a school for special needs and a mental health clinic. Helping people get connected to services is the highlight of my day. Since I am pursuing my degree in social work, seeing how much people rely on us and how thankful they are pushes me to go harder.”

Melina Vang wrote, “Initially I was an online student for my first year at NHCC but for my second year, I’m looking forward to my classes in person. Being on campus and seeing the community for the first time is really inspiring and motivating. Meeting new people and learning more about the campus is what’s motivating me!”

Elijah Gomes said, “I am motivated to make my life mean something outside my usual circle. I want to create impact for generations.”

Panhia Lo said, “It’s not what but who and why. I’m in recovery and trying to make up for the lost time from not being in my children’s lives. The lost time can never be replaced. The only thing I can do is improve my life so I can prepare for their future. I graduate this fall and plan to continue at a university to gain my bachelor’s in psychology. I have a plan to open my own business to educate minorities and low-educated individuals about what mode-altering substances really do to your body.”

Mena Moua said, “What motivates me is the support I get from family and friends! They encourage me to keep going and striving for more every year during the new semester. The wanting to know and gather more information and learn are also what motivates me to do well this fall!”

Kiah Shepherd said, “I am motivated by taking a step toward changing/advancing my career. I am excited for the new journey and opportunities to come!”

Ursula Swaray said, “My ultimate goal of entering the nursing program and working in a field I am deeply passionate about, while bringing comfort to people during some of their most challenging times, is my greatest motivation to work hard and give my best in all my classes.”

I am honored to serve as president of North Hennepin Community College, and work alongside such talented students, staff and faculty. As we embark on this new year together, let us continue to uplift one another, celebrate our shared successes, and remain committed to equity, access, and excellence.
