Whether receiving tutoring or serving as a peer tutor, NHCC students are gaining the skills to succeed. The College’s Tutoring Center recently earned international certification from the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), affirming its commitment to high-quality academic support and student leadership development.
For many students, tutoring is a turning point.
Bao Her remembers beginning a semester convinced failure was inevitable. “At the start of the semester, I was convinced that I would fail,” Bao shared. “With the help of the tutoring center, I went from an imaginary ‘F’ to a real ‘A.’” The patient, judgment-free environment allowed Bao to ask questions openly and hear concepts explained in different ways until they truly made sense.
Ray Foss found that tutoring provided clarity in concept-heavy coursework. Having a dedicated appointment to talk through confusion created a safe space to strengthen understanding and build effective study strategies. Instead of simply preparing for the next test, Ray developed tools for long-term academic success.
Tutoring at NHCC is not only about receiving support—it is also about developing leaders.
Messan Amouzouvi became a peer tutor because of a desire to help others succeed. Through CRLA-aligned training, peer tutors learn how to adapt to different learning styles, communicate clearly, and respond with patience and flexibility. “Seeing someone understand a concept that once felt confusing is very rewarding,” Messan shared.
One moment stands out. A grandmother returning to school to set an example for her grandchildren worked closely with Messan to prepare for a retake exam. She later returned with a bright smile: “Thank you for believing in me. I passed my test. I got an A.”
Stories like these reflect NHCC’s mission in action. Some students walk into the Tutoring Center needing support to stay on track. Others step forward as peer tutors, gaining confidence, leadership experience, and a deeper mastery of their disciplines. Together, they create a culture of shared learning and encouragement.
The international certification recognizes what students already experience every day: at NHCC, learning is supported, leadership is cultivated, and students are equipped not only to pass their classes—but to succeed.
