Every day at North Hennepin Community College, I am inspired by the determination of our students and the dedication of our faculty. In our classrooms and labs, I see students discovering their strengths and preparing for careers that will shape Minnesota’s future.
For example, our programs in computer science, data science, and cybersecurity open doors to high‑demand fields. What sets NHCC apart is our experienced faculty, who have worked in the field, and our industry partnerships, which help guide our curriculum to ensure our students are ready for the workforce.
Computer science at NHCC provides a foundational understanding of how technology works, from hardware and software to networks and systems.
Data science builds on those fundamentals by teaching students to uncover the contextual meaning in the information that drives today’s world. Upon completion of the data science program, Olena Kabachenko plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in a related field. She said, “NHCC has played a major role in preparing for my future. The projects I complete in my classes give me practical experience working with data and applying what I learn.” Olena also credits career services, tutoring, and the Be Bold Break the Mold mentoring program for contributing to her success.
Faculty member Jack Pope, who brings deep industry experience and a passion for teaching, often reminds students that problem‑solving is at the heart of computing. His new textbook, “Discrete Mathematics for Data Science,” uses a visual, hands‑on approach to strengthen students’ critical thinking. “Students need tools that strengthen their ability to reason, not replace it,” he shared with me. “Our goal is to help them understand what’s happening beneath the surface so they can build the future with intention.”
Cybersecurity, our newest program, prepares students to protect the systems that keep our communities connected. Cybersecurity is about trust, ensuring that hospitals, schools, businesses and public services can operate safely. Students gain hands‑on experience that mirrors real‑world environments, giving them the confidence to meet urgent workforce needs.
We are fortunate to be guided by an outstanding Industry Advisory Board representing organizations such as Target, Mayo Clinic, Amazon, Medica, Siemens, Snap Finance, Oracle, and the University of Minnesota’s Supercomputing Institute. Their insight keeps our curriculum aligned with employer needs. Based on their recommendations, we strengthened security concepts across our computer science courses and incorporated multiple database technologies, changes that will help students in their future pursuits.
Of course, our ability to continue this innovative programming depends on community support. As the 2026 legislative session continues budget discussions, I remain hopeful that our elected representatives will continue to recognize that investing in higher education strengthens Minnesota’s students, workforce, and communities.
For Minnesota State colleges and universities, including North Hennepin, the stakes are significant. Our top capital request this year is $200 million for asset preservation, supporting more than 100 projects statewide to upgrade roofs, windows, exterior walls, and essential mechanical and utility systems. These investments create safe, modern, and inspiring learning environments worthy of our students’ ambition.
At NHCC, we believe education is about more than preparing students for jobs; it’s about helping them build lives filled with purpose, connection and possibility. I am grateful to the students, employees, legislators and partners who make this work possible. Together, we are shaping a brighter, more equitable future.
