There’s something extra special about college love. Not only because it creates a lifelong connection, but because it’s rooted in shared memories, the spirit of your school, and the place that brought you together.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re spotlighting a real love story that started at NHCC. Maddi and Theo, both graduates from NHCC’s class of 2021, stayed close to home for their next steps,
Maddi earning her bachelor’s degree in Echocardiography from St. Kate’s and Theo completing his bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing at Metro State University.
They just got married in November at the end of 2025!

Let’s dive into their love story!

How did you meet and where?
Theo & I met in public speaking class in the fall of 2018. He took the class because he wanted to;
I took it because it was a requirement for my degree. He sat behind me, and we bonded over trap shooting as a high school sport we both did.
We became friends after he friended me on Facebook and then proceeded to get me through a breakup, and he has been there and stuck by my side ever since!

What significance does NHCC hold for you?
NHCC is the birthplace of our friendship which blossomed into love. The close-knit community and wonderful staff/faculty is something we miss having in our lives! The college really wants students to succeed, and you can see that in how professors teach and give their all. I was lucky enough to have my amazing father-in-law, Paul Melchior, to be my biology professor 6 years before his son and I would get married!

Do you think you would have met if it weren’t for NHCC? Why or why not?
Definitely not. We came from different areas of the Minneapolis suburbs, and our paths really wouldn’t have crossed. But, thank god for NHCC for bringing us together by happenstance!

What are a few of your favorite things to do together?
We love to watch horror movies, go antiquing, hiking/traveling, and just spending time with our favorite people and our furbabies. <3

Did you go on a honeymoon, or do you hope to at some point?
Yes! We went on a mini honeymoon the week after we got married and spent a weekend up in Duluth and Two Harbors in a little cabin. It was very cozy! At the end of March, we're going on our actual honeymoon, and will be spending a little over a week in London and going to lots of museums!

If you were asked to give advice to NHCC students about meeting other people and building relationships/friendships, what would you say?

"Try anything and everything. There are so many clubs, activities, and fun elective classes where you can meet special people that will have a big impact on your life. You never know what you'll find! And cherish the time you have at college,
it goes by so fast!"

What have you been up to in the years since graduation?
We both graduated from NHCC in 2021, and I graduated from St Kate's with a bachelor's degree in Echocardiography, which is what I do! I work at Fairview Southdale Hospital and get to ultrasound hearts every day. <3 Theo graduated from Metro State University with a bachelor's degree in Professional Writing, and currently, he works as a historical interpreter at Historic Fort Snelling.
He also works with a YouTuber on history/blacksmithing videos, called How To Make Everything.

And finally, I’ve just got to know, what are your pets’ names? They’re so cute!
We have Mortimer (Morty) the tortoise, Sammy the dog, and Pickles and Nessie, our cats!
