According to the National Association of Social Workers, March is designated as National Social Work Month. We wanted to take this opportunity to reach out and ask NHCC's very own campus Social Worker, Julia Salinas a few questions about the field.

  • What are the main duties of a Social Worker in general?

The main role of Social Workers is to help and advocate for individuals in need. Some other duties include, assessing the client’s needs and creating a plan or goals they wish to achieve, referring them to local community agencies, following up with clients, and also responding to clients in crisis situations.

  • What are the main duties of a Social Worker at NHCC?

My role as a Social Worker at NHCC is to advocate for our students, ensure that their basic needs are met, and connecting them to community resources. I accomplish this by working closely with each of our students and identifying their needs, by providing guidance throughout the process, and by collaborating with internal and external partners. Ultimately, the goal is to help students succeed in their education once their basic needs are met. Lastly, I also oversee the NHCC Food Cupboard on campus.

  • If you could tell aspiring Social Workers, or current students a piece of advice about the field it would be ______?

The field of social work is very rewarding because you’re helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. At the same time though, days can be unpredictable and you have to wear multiple hats, so being adaptable and a team player are key skills to have.

  • How were your graduate school courses, did you enjoy the process?

I attended Augsburg University and they have a great social work program. I enjoyed all of their courses and the entire social work program. I also enjoyed the internships because that gives you a more hands-on experience.

  • What is your favorite thing about being a Social Worker?

As a Social Worker, I have the unique opportunity to work with people holistically, treating the person as a whole and considering all social aspects of the person’s life. I also enjoy listening to people’s stories-their struggles and achievements- it’s very humbling to me and it allows me to appreciate my career even more.

  • What is one thing about being a Social Worker that is challenging?

The most challenging part of my career is not having all the answers, resources or solutions to people’s needs. Even though this is a challenge, this allows me to think outside the box at times.
