Education

  • BFA, Fort Hays State University
  • BS, Washington State University
  • MS, Washington State University

I grew up in a small, mid-western Kansas town where cattle, corn, flat land and dust rule.  Raised by my grandparents that believed in hard work,  honesty, integrity and the power of education, I obtained my first degree (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Interior Design.  Yes, Interior Design!  In the 1980's in my small hometown, my dreams of becoming a veterinarian were not considered and I was urged to follow a field that was more "girl" acceptable.  I do love art and after achieving my BFA, I worked in the Interior Design field for 5 years before making the leap to achieve my dreams of working in science to help animals.  Today, I am an artist as well as a scientist (and science educator).

When I made the decision to return to college, I chose Washington State University as my home and got down to work!  I completed my Bachelor of Science in Zoology/Microbiology as well as my Master of Science in Biology/Electron Microscopy.  Through my education I was introduced to viruses and electron microscopy and I found my true passion.  Electron microscopy and helping animals!

After many wonderful years in this field I developed acute glaucoma in my left eye and alas, had to leave my career as a full-time scientist/researcher/teacher.  My path led me to North Hennepin Community College and teaching in the Biological Sciences department.  Biology is fascinating, amazing and complicated and I find an enormous amount of reward for helping students achieve their goals!
