Cynthia J. Bunting

English Instructor, North Hennepin Community College

Cynthia J. Bunting is an English Instructor at North Hennepin Community College, where she specializes in College Writing I (ENGL 1201). With over 20 years of experience in the Minnesota State system, she has taught at SCTCC, Anoka Ramsey, Central Lakes College and St. Cloud State University. Having attended community college herself, she brings a first-hand perspective of the student experience to her instructional design.

Because I started my own journey as a community college student, I know that every person arrives with unique goals. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, I provide a toolkit of resources—such as multi-modal instruction and materials in both oral and written formats—to ensure you have the specific support that matches your individual strengths and needs.

A graduate of the Equity by Design Teaching Academy (Spring 2025), Cynthia uses Participatory Action Research (PAR) to create a "judgment-free" classroom focused on socio-cultural engagement and student belonging.

I redesigned this course with you in mind. I care most about what you’re trying to say—not just grammar or mechanics—so you have every opportunity to see your experiences reflected in what we learn.

Cynthia is a leader in Open Educational Resources (OER) and authored a digital textbook for teacher education to provide students with free, high-quality materials. She also received the 2019 D2L Collaboration Award for her work integrating electronic portfolios as a high-impact teaching practice.

I am committed to removing financial barriers by providing free or low-cost digital books. We also use tech tools to help you build a professional portfolio of your own work, giving you a tangible resource you can use as you move forward in your career.

Cynthia’s perspective is shaped by her history working with diverse populations, including her time as a BIE Reading Coach and an instructor at Mille Lacs Tribal College. She values integrating cultural traditions into the academic environment, such as sugarbush, wild ricing, and smudging. When not teaching, she finds inspiration in the outdoors, biking the Paul Bunyan Trail, mountain biking in Cuyuna, or kayaking the Brainerd Lakes Area (BLA). She is also a passionate creator who enjoys repurposing, sewing, and crocheting.
