October 9, 2023 – Campus Statement Regarding Recent Events in Israel

Dear NHCC Community,

I am writing to express our deep concern and empathy regarding the recent events in Israel and their impact on our Jewish community here at NHCC. Many of us in the NHCC community have close family, friends, colleagues, former classmates, and students in the region, and many have spent frightening days trying to reach those who live there. My thoughts are with all of those who are suffering in the wake of this outburst of violence.

As you are aware, the conflict in Israel and its surrounding regions has generated significant distress and uncertainty, leading to profound emotions among our students, faculty, and staff who have connections to the affected areas. During such challenging times, it is crucial that we, as an academic institution, reaffirm our commitment to fostering a campus environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and empathy.

In Solidarity

Our Jewish students, faculty, and staff are an integral part of our academic community, contributing to the rich tapestry of perspectives and experiences that make NHCC vibrant and diverse. It is paramount that we stand in solidarity with them during this difficult period. We condemn in the strongest way terrorism such as we have seen perpetrated against innocent civilians during these events. We want to assure our Jewish community that they have our unwavering support. We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment where all individuals can express their thoughts and feelings, engage in respectful dialogue, and access the resources they may need during this time. Here are a few ways to do that. * Share community resources with others. * Connect students with NHCC Counseling Services. * Access the Employee Assistance Program for personal support 24/7.

Our Commitment Equity

Our commitment to the well-being and inclusivity of our Jewish community remains unwavering. We are here to listen, support, and work collaboratively to create an environment where all individuals can thrive academically and emotionally, irrespective of their background or beliefs. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain proactive in our efforts to support our Jewish community and all members of our college community.

Please take steps to extend compassion and reach out if you need support, and, as always, let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your dedication to our institution's values and the well-being of our entire community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rolando García

North Hennepin Community College President
