A New Approach to Leadership Development at NHCC
Leadership at North Hennepin Community College is evolving through the new Holistic Leadership Development Program (HLDP).
Building on the foundation of the former L.E.A.D. program (Leadership through Experience, Awareness, and Development), HLDP takes a broader approach to leadership development. The program is designed to help students build practical skills they can use in the classroom, at work, in their communities, and in everyday life.
Why the Change?
Leadership is about more than leading a group or completing activities. It is also about building connections, understanding yourself, communicating effectively, and growing through new experiences.
HLDP reflects this expanded view of leadership by helping students develop skills that support both personal and professional growth.
What to Expect
Interactive Learning
Throughout the fall and spring semesters, students can participate in engaging workshops that encourage reflection, discussion, and real-world application.
Flexible Participation
Sessions are offered in the Campus Center and on Zoom to make participation more accessible. Recordings are also available in D2L, giving students the flexibility to learn on their own schedule.
Earn Recognition
Students who complete all six sessions will receive a certificate from the Office of Student Life at the annual awards banquet in April. Save the date: April 29.
Leadership Through a Holistic Lens
HLDP focuses on themes such as:
- Sustainability
- Self-reliance
- Reflection
- Resiliency
- Communication
These topics help students develop the awareness, confidence, and empathy needed to lead in a variety of settings.

The first HLDP session, Networking and Personal Branding, takes place on September 29.
