Ellen Rutchick - "In Passing: Days of the Dead", Oaxaca, Mexico, 2012-2014
Photographs by Ellen Rutchick
October 5-October 30, 2015
Opening Reception on Wednesday, October 7, 6-8pm, Joseph Gazzuolo Fine Arts Gallery
Since 1999, I have traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico every year in October to celebrate the Days of the Dead in a place where contemporary events and political, social and cultural crosscurrents intersect with centuries-old traditions. Each year, I observe and photograph what I see within the timeframe and context of the Days of the Dead.
As an artist, I strive to be open to whatever is given to me in a particular situation and record visions of what anthropologist Carlos Castaneda called a non-ordinary reality. With my camera, I seek to capture those surprising moments when that special reality is revealed.
Free admission, Joseph Gazzuolo Fine Arts Gallery, FAC 135. For a complete list of 2015-16 Art Exhibits.
