Frequently Asked Questions

What types of scholarships are available?
The NHCC Foundation awards approximately 150 scholarships per year to students attending NHCC.  Amounts range from $150 to $5000 per scholarship. Many different types of scholarships are available to NHCC students.

  • Need based scholarships are available to new and returning students showing financial need, regardless of their financial aid status or GPA.
  • Merit based scholarships are available to students meeting the specified academic criteria.
  • Program based scholarships are available to students enrolled in specific programs at NHCC.
  • Alumni scholarships are available for students graduating or transferring from NHCC and continuing their education at another institution.
  • Phi Theta Kappa/Bookstore scholarships are available to students each semester.  These scholarships are up to $200.  You are able to apply and receive this scholarship if you have received a scholarship in the same academic year.

How do you determine a “new” student versus a “current” student?

  • New students:  students who have never attended North Hennepin Community College before, including students now in high school.
  • Current students:  students who are currently enrolled at North Hennepin Community College or have been enrolled within the last 5 years.

What is full-time enrollment and part-time enrollment?

  • Full-time enrollment: 12 credits or more; Nursing students:  8 credits once they are accepted and taking nursing classes/clinicals
  • Part-time enrollment: students taking 6–12 credits are defined as part-time students for scholarship awards. A student must take a minimum of 6 credits to be considered for a scholarship at NHCC.

When are applications accepted?

Applications are accepted during the semester prior to the semester you would receive the scholarships.  For example: Scholarships which are available for fall semester are published and applications are accepted during the prior spring semester.  Scholarships available for spring semester are published and applications accepted during the prior fall semester.

How is my scholarship paid out to me?

  • New and current scholarship awards are made as a credit to the student’s tuition/fees account.  Graduating and Alumni awards are mailed to the student’s transferring institution to be applied on their tuition/fees account.

  • Scholarship award amounts for full-year scholarships are split equally between fall and spring term; spring term attendance is required or the balance of the award is forfeited.

If an award states $1,000 and I receive a part-time scholarship, does that mean that I will get $500 of the $1,000 award?
Scholarships will be prorated at a dollar amount per credit.  For example:  If a $1,000 award is for full-time and you are taking 8 credits, your award would be:  $1,000/12 credits x 8 credits = $670.
