Remote Tutoring Services

While classes remain online, Peer Tutoring, the Math Resource Center, and the Writing Center will be available on a remote basis. The Math Resource Center is currently accepting tutoring requests during regular tutoring hours. The Writing Center and Peer Tutoring program will begin accepting requests on Monday, March 23. Students will be able to work with tutors through a number a methods. One of the main tools we will be using to connect with you is the Zoom platform which is available to all NHCC students. Please become familiar with Zoom by viewing these tutorial videos.

What you will need?

You will need a computer with a speaker and microphone capability (many people like to use a headset/microphone), and internet access.

How does it work?

Just prior to the start of your tutoring session, make sure your computer is turned on and that your volume and recording levels are functioning. Have your NHCC email open. At the start of your appointment, your tutor will send you an email with a link inviting you to join them in their “tutor space” in the Zoom platform. Just double click the link and the platform will open up. Both you and the tutor will be able to share pages from your respective computers as well as to speak with each other.

Questions?

If you have questions about your equipment or any technical issues, please contact the Help Desk, 763-424-0957 or helpdesk@nhcc.edu.

Scheduling an Appointment

Peer Tutoring

To schedule an appointment for Peer Tutoring, please go to www.nhcc.edu/tutoring or email tutoring@nhcc.edu. Peer tutoring appointments will be conducted using the Zoom platform. We will have staff available to respond to email and schedule you with a tutor during normal tutoring hours, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. If you have a standing appointment, there is no need to contact us to set up an appointment; you are already in the schedule and can keep your spot.

Writing Center

The Writing Center will continue to work with written assignments for any course. We will offer online tutoring in two formats:

  1. Appointments using Zoom will allow students to share screens/texts and have conversations with tutors. In addition, students who have not started a paper are welcome to make appointments for brainstorming. Go to www.nhcc.edu/tutoring or email tutoring@nhcc.edu to schedule an appointment. If you cannot find an appointment, please email tutoring@nhcc.edu.
  2. For written feedback on essays, students may also email a draft to tutoring@nhcc.edu. One of our faculty tutors or our senior peer tutor will respond with feedback within 24 hours. Please note the following guidelines:
  • Indicate your course information and instructor’s name in the Subject line or in the message text. Add any other information in the message text that your tutor might need to know.
  • Students will be limited to TWO online submissions each week.
  • Tutors will spend approximately 30 minutes to determine a focus for revision.
  • Comments will be made in the margin of the paper.
  • Tutors will not proofread/edit for students or make direct changes to texts.
