Assessment and Placement is required of all students (unless exempt by waiver)! The ACCUPLACER Placement Test assesses your skills in reading, writing and math, and identifies which class(es) best fit your skill level. Results do not affect admission to NHCC, but may affect your ability to register for certain classes.
Prepare for your Placement Test
It's a good idea to spend some time in review and preparation. It will help you know what to expect, and will likely help you improve your score.

Transfer Test Scores
Tests that are routinely administered by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) include a) ACCUPLACER (CPT), b) ACCUPLACER Companion, and c) ACCUPLACER (ESL).
Students may request to have ACCUPLACER tests scores from another institution evaluated for course placement at NHCC by submitting a copy of the ACCUPLACER test results and the Placement Test Waiver to the Testing Center.
Retests
Retests are allowed once a semester and only until course work has begun in that discipline.
- Retests carry a fee of $10.
Remote Testing
If you are a student of NHCC, seeking a degree online, and unable to take the ACCUPLACER on-campus, you may complete your placement testing at a remote location in accordance with the following:
- The student contacts the testing center of a local college or university and confirms their willingness to administer the ACCUPLACER test in a remote capacity.
- The proctor a) is employed by the educational institution, b) is familiar with accepted practices for administering standardized tests, c) has no vested interest in the student's scores, and d) is not related to the student.
- The student completes Request to Take ACCUPLACER at a Remote Location and submits it to the Testing Center.
- Upon receipt, the Testing Center confirms the proctor is approved and contacts the student to schedule a test date and time.
Disability Accommodations
If you have a disability preventing you from taking the Placement Test under standard conditions, you may request accommodations (for example, a reader, scribe, or extra time) from the Disability Access Services Office before testing.
