One of the application requirements for the nursing program at North Hennepin Community College is that you take the HESI A2 Admissions Assessment. It is a timed, multiple choice exam evaluating your knowledge. The exam is computer-based, and will be offered at North Hennepin Community College in the month prior to the application deadline. This exam will assist in admission by providing a reliable evaluation of students’ academic ability prior to entering the Nursing Program. There are no minimum scores required at this time, however exam scores can be used for selection criteria for admission.


All applicants to the North Hennepin Community College Nursing Program will be required to take the HESI A2 Admission Assessment prior to the nursing program application deadline. Check back here after October, 2012 for more details and directions on how to register and take the assessment.

 

What will be on the test?

Test sections for the Associate Degree Nursing (RN) exam

The HESI A2 is a timed, multiple choice exam evaluating your knowledge. You will need to take the following sections of the exam.

  • Math: 55-item exam. Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, and general math facts that are useful, for example, when calculating drug dosages and solutions. Personal calculators are not permitted, but a basic calculator is available within the software. Scratch paper will be provided.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: 30-item exam. Focuses on questions related to Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Biology:  30-item exam.  Focuses on questions related to biology.
  • Chemistry:  30-item exam.  Focuses on questions related to chemistry.
  • Reading Comprehension: 53-item exam. Reading scenarios that are health related. Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, including: identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.
  • Vocabulary: 50-item exam. Contains basic vocabulary that is often used in health care fields.
  • Grammar: 55-item exam. Contains basic grammar, including: parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, and commonly occurring grammatical errors.
  • Critical Thinking: 30-item assessment of critical thinking ability. This exam is a four-choice, multiple-choice test. All answers are correct; however, each choice reflects a different degree critical thinking skills. Scores range from 0-1000. The higher the score, the better the ability to think critically within the discipline of nursing.
  • Learning Styles: 14-item assessment of preferred learning style.
  • Personality Style: 15-item assessment of personality related to preferred learning style. Students receive a printout with study tips based on their learning style and personality profile.

When will I take the test?

The test in only offered at NHCC in December and January and will need to be completed before the program application deadline. Visit this website again after October for more information about how to register for the test and to sign up for a date to take the test.

How can I prepare for the HESI A2 Exam?

It is recommended you study using a review book. You can purchase your own or use one of the limited copies that are available in the NHCC Library.
