Three students of North Hennepin Community College’s Student Support Services/TRIO program recently received the Keith Sherin Global Leaders International Scholar Award.
Shelly Siegel, NHCC’s Director of TRIO Programs, says, “We are extremely proud of our three students –Saif Alnabi, Lydia Masese, and Tylan Mitchell. All three worked incredibly hard to put forth their applications. Honestly, we would have been thrilled if even one of our students was selected for this award, but having three is unprecedented.” Both Alnabi and Mitchell are working on their international business degrees, while Masese is working on her civil engineering degree.

The scholarship allows TRIO students the opportunity to study abroad this summer in Salamanca, Spain, where they will earn six college credits at the city’s university and be immersed in the Spanish culture. It is awarded by the Council in Education, TRIO’s national association, and only 15 TRIO students nationwide are selected. The selection process is rigorous and involves two separate panels of judges who are higher education professionals from across the United States and surrounding territories.
Student Support Services/TRIO is a federally funded program through the United States Department of Education that provides free academic support to college students who are either first generation (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree), low income, or have a documented disability.
