NHCC Foundation Receives Grant from Otto Bremer Foundation to Support STEM Initiatives in Cornerstones Program

    July 5, 2011

North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) recently received a $36,000 grant from Otto Bremer Foundation which will be used to implement a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to its Cornerstones program.

Jennifer Summer-Lambrecht, NHCC Foundation’s Interim Executive Director, says, “We are very appreciative about what the Otto Bremer grant will enable us to do for our students and community. It will help NHCC cultivate its Cornerstones program by adding a new STEM learning community. This student cohort will focus on academic support in math and science, career exploration in STEM fields, and much more.”

“Low-income students, students of color, and first-generation college students are historically underrepresented in postsecondary education,” adds Charlotte Johnson, a trustee of the Otto Bremer Foundation. “With this grant to the North Hennepin County College Foundation, we are targeting our resources to help promote access to postsecondary education.”

Cornerstones is a college preparation program for underrepresented junior high and high school students. The program prepares students with the skills they need for college by providing after school tutoring, Saturday workshops, and summer programs. Using a holistic approach, Cornerstones focuses not only on academics, but also social and emotional elements, as well as leadership initiatives. It is a proven model that increases high school retention, college enrollment and success, awareness of other post-secondary resources, and knowledge of career opportunities.

Created in 1944, the Otto Bremer Foundation assists people in achieving full economic, civic, and social participation in and for the betterment of their communities. The Foundation’s work to help build and maintain vibrant communities is based on the vision and legacy of Otto Bremer, whose commitment to Bremer Bank communities and to those working to make their lives better continues to guide the Foundation.
