Today is Dr. John O’Brien’s first day as President of North Hennepin Community College, replacing former president, Ann Wynia, who is retiring. He was appointed to the position on March 17, 2010 by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.
“We are fortunate to have found a president who is passionate about higher education and brings a unique depth and breadth of experience to our college,” says Chief Human Resources Officer, Sue Appelquist. “John brings years of Minnesota higher education experience in the areas of teaching, technology, campus administration and statewide system leadership.”
Dr. O’Brien recently directed the “Students First” project, a Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system initiative to improve student services. Before that, he was the acting president, academic vice president and chief academic officer at Century College. Previously he served as an associate vice chancellor for instructional technology in the Office of the Chancellor, and an instructor and faculty association president at Normandale Community College. He has also taught English at Augustana College in South Dakota, the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, and the University of St. Thomas.
Dr. O’Brien holds a bachelor’s degree in English and education from Augustana College, a master’s degree in Anglo-Irish literature from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, in Ireland and a doctorate in English from the University of Minnesota.
