North Hennepin Community College broke ground at a ceremony today for the new Center for Business and Technology.

“Today we are able to celebrate this groundbreaking of our new Center for Business and Technology. It is going to be a 30,000 square foot addition and will house some wonderful North Hennepin programs,” said President Ann Wynia. “I am delighted that I get to participate in the groundbreaking and look forward to hearing about the grand opening!”

The Center for Business and Technology (CBT) is being renovated to accommodate the growing number of students choosing to attend NHCC. It will remain closed during construction and is scheduled to reopen in November 2011. Departments, offices and classes are being temporarily relocated to other areas on campus and the Northern Light Center just east of campus on 85th Avenue North.

After renovation, it will provide 13 more classrooms, additional computers and lab space, and a multi-purpose room for business workforce training. It will also be energy efficient, include a sustainable design, and ensure the delivery of educational services in an atmosphere conducive to student success.

“It is appropriate that North Hennepin would celebrate the groundbreaking for construction of its new Center for Business and Technology and say ‘farewell’ on the same day to current President Ann Wynia, since so much of her time has been devoted to securing the funding for this building over the past few years,” says Communications Director Carmen Shoquist.

Funding for NHCC’s construction project was included in the 2010 Capital Investment bill approved during the recently completed legislative session. NHCC received the $14.782 million requested for the completion of the CBT renovation and expansion. This project includes the elimination of $1.5 million in deferred maintenance. Ebert Construction is the general contractor for the project. Design work was completed by the BKV Group in 2008.
