NHCC Receives Grant from Advance IT Minnesota to include Non-Technical Skills Curriculum in Computer Science Program

    August 3, 2011

North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) recently received a $35,000 grant from Advance IT Minnesota to include broader workplace competencies to its Computer Science A.S. curriculum such as team skills, collaboration, interpersonal communication, relationship skills, and self-management.

Renae Fry, Dean of Business and Career Programs at NHCC says, “Essential, non-technical employment skills will be taught to students by faculty in the classroom, as well as through interaction with industry partners. This type of experience will enhance their understanding of what’s expected in today’s computer science workplace. The work to be undertaken with this grant is supported by our Computer Science Advisory Board. They recognize that our students’ career success will be greatly enhanced by the addition of this curriculum in our courses.”

NHCC’s proposal scored the highest among all applicants in the reported comparative measures for this competitive grant. Evaluators thought that the skills identified by NHCC were well defined and its plan to measure its success in implementing the planned curriculum well thought out.

Advance IT Minnesota is the Center of Excellence in IT for the State of Minnesota, administered through the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Its mission is to engage employers, educators, and learners to develop a more robust IT Workforce in Minnesota.
