There is a new trend in the delivery of adult basic education---it’s called integrated teaching. The Adult Academic Program has partnered with North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) in one such integrated class titled Introduction to Computer Skills, College, and Career Options. In this computer-focused class, an ABE instructor and a NHCC instructor work together to deliver lessons using teaching methods that best support the ABE learner; for example, the ABE instructor may preview and reinforce skills and concepts covered in the college curriculum. While the content is college-level, the class size is limited, and the pace is a bit slower than a regular college class. The goal is to fully support ABE learners as they prepare for future college classes. “Having another instructor in the classroom who understands the unique needs of adult learners is fantastic! While these students transition to college-level curriculum, integrated teaching helps them to achieve success right now,” said Nancy Wagner, Business and Technology Instructor at NHCC. Students who successfully finish the Computer Skills, College, and Career Options class will earn five free credits from NHCC, a National Career Readiness Certificate, and invaluable skills to help them continue in college or enter a career.
The next Introduction to Computer Skills, College, and Career Options Class starts August 29, 2011. The hours are Monday – Thursday from 9:30 – 2:30 p.m. Call AAP at 763-504-8300 for more information. |
