Transfer Students

Whether you're transfering into NHCC or getting ready to transfer on, plan in advance to ensure a smooth transfer process!

Arrange to have your official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities submitted to the NHCC as soon as possible.

Please allow up to two weeks for your transcript(s) to be evaluated. Plan early if you need to use transfer coursework to satisfy prerequisites.

Transfer of Credit

In general, credits for transfer are evaluated based on the following:

  • Coursework must be completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Coursework must be comparable in nature, content and level to coursework offered by NHCC.
  • Coursework in which an A, B, C, D or P was earned will be considered for transfer. However, if the student's cumulative GPA (grade point average) at the sending college or university is less than a 2.00, D grades will not be accepted in transfer unless the course meets a MnTC goal at that institution.
  • Credit for non-equivalent college-level professional, occupational courses will be considered as electives up to a maximum of sixteen (16) credits.
  • Coursework transfers into NHCC without GPA, unless stated otherwise within degree requirements.

Right of appeal: Students have the right to appeal an adverse decision by submitting an Academic Appeal to the Counseling and Advising Department. Supporting documentation should include a syllabus, course description, reading list, final exam, or other project, which may provide evidence of the course transferability. The Dean overseeing the corresponding discipline or program will review your appeal and notify you of the outcome.

Transfer Resources

  • Wondering about transfer in general? Check out the Transfer Basics - from a glossary of terms to frequently asked questions.
  • Conduct your own degree audit through the Degree Audit Report System (DARS). Your online account provides a report of your progress toward earning your degree at NHCC.
  • Use the free, web-based transfer tool u.select (formerly CAS), which provides fast and accurate course and transfer equivalency information.
  • Use Transfer Guides to help you select courses that will satisfy program or major requirements at receiving colleges or universities.
  • Review the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) Goal Areas. The MnTC is the core of the general education requirements for the Associate of Arts degree and career programs at NHCC.
  • Search for an Articulation Agreement. Articulation Agreements are formal agreements between between two or more institutions, that specify how transfer credits will be accepted for specialized professional programs, such as certificates or AS, AAS, or AFA degrees.
  • Review information for other types of transfer credit (AP, CLEP, IB, Military, etc.) to see if you qualify.
