Application Procedure
All steps below must be completed before your application is considered.
- Application Form and Contract. Submit a completed and signed International Application Form (F-1 visa) and the accompanying contract. The contract identifies important information, for which F-1 visa holders are responsible for knowing and following.
- Application Fee. Submit the non-refundable application fee of $20.00 (U.S. currency). If you are sending payment from outside of the U.S., please use an International Money Order. Bank checks will be accepted if issued from a U.S. bank.
- Financial Documentation. F-1 students are required to document sufficient financial support for an entire year of education. You may not rely upon financial aid from the College or employment in the U.S. as a source of income. Documentation includes:
- The North Hennepin Community College Financial Certificate to be completed by the person (yourself or your sponsor) who will be responsible to fund your education. This document is a contract and must be notarized.
- The same person(s) signing the Financial Certificate must submit an official bank statement which shows a balance of at least $21,361 in U.S. currency. If the value is not stated in U.S. currency, NHCC will convert it upon receipt of the statement. The bank statement must be original, less than two months old, and certified by a bank official as an official copy. The required amount of $21,361 is the amount necessary to fund one academic year of tuition and fees, books, housing, food, transportation, medical insurance, and other expenses.
- Academic Records. F-1 students are required to have a high school diploma. Provide an official, certified copy of your academic records and diplomas from all previously attended secondary or high schools, colleges, universities, and professional schools. All records must be translated to English and certified by a qualified translator. If applicable, official copies of the results of the General Certificate Examinations (GCE) or West African Examinations Council (WAEC) should be submitted. If you attended school in Kenya, you must have a mean grade of C or higher.
- Autobiography. Write a one-page essay and include:
- Your academic and employment background,
- Your reasons for wanting to study at North Hennepin Community College, and
- Your educational and career goals.
- Proof of English Proficiency. F-1 students are required to prove proficiency in the English language. Acceptable forms of proof of English proficiency include:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Minimum score of 500 (paper/pencil), 173 (computer), or 61 with 15 on each section (web). The School Identification Number for North Hennepin is 6498.
- IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) - Minimum score of 5.
- Michigan Test - Minimum score of 75.
- ELS or ESL - Completion of Level 9 (or the equivalent) including reading and writing.
- English Composition Class - Completed at any accredited U.S. college or university, and earned a grade of C or higher.
- Individuals already in the U.S. may take the English Language Skills Assessment (LOEP Test) at NHCC instead of the TOEFL. Please note: If your English ability is lower than the college level English instruction at NHCC (900 level ESOL or higher), you will be required to seek English training elsewhere.
- Important: All test score reports and recommendations must be official and be sent directly to our Admissions Office from the testing centers or institutions. Photo copies are not accepted.
- Information Release Form. If any other person, other than the student, will be working with the Admissions Office during the application process, and will require private information intended for the student, the student will need to provide authorization to release this information.
- F-1 Student Transfer Form. Students who are transferring from one U.S. institution to another must notify the international student advisor of both institutions of the intent to transfer.
